.:.Harmful Ingredients In Diaper Rash Creams.:.
The other day I took my younger son to his check up with the Urologist. He had a circumcision a couple of months ago and the Doc just wanted to make sure the healing was going smoothly. Very sweet old man. He reminds me of Santa Claus for some reason. Lol. Well anyways, my monkey had a little bit of diaper rash and so I slabbed on the usual cream before we left home. When he noticed the cream, he immediately asked me what kind of diaper rash cream I used. I told him it was Lil Canus Goat’s Milk. He then told me not to use Desitin. He told me that they are trying to pull it off the shelves because it contains Talc. Talc is also used in some baby powders. It could be serious if inhaled and is linked to ovarian cancer & Urinary Tract Infections. I’m glad he told me because I was actually going to purchase a tube of Desitin because we ran out of the Lil Canus. I was very curious about all the information he gave me and so I wanted to look up more info. I came across this site here that lists even more nasty ingredients.
HARMFUL CHEMICALS
-:¦:- Sodium Borate. These conventional diaper creams contain ingredients, such as Sodium Borate, which the Cosmetic Industry Review Panel concluded are Not Safe for Use on Infant Skin. Sodium Borate is the main ingredient in cockroach poison, and can be fatal to children upon ingestion of only a few grams. Contrary to popular belief, it is a documented fact that chemicals applied to the skin are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, where they circulate and eventually deposit themselves in fat and organs (for example, Parabens, a popular preservative found in baby and adult body care products have been found inside of breast tumors).
-:¦:- Ceteareth 5 & 20; PEG 8. Brand-name diaper creams also contain ingredients that the Cosmetics Industry found 'not safe for use on damaged skin' including Ceteareth 5 & 20 and Peg-8. Skin showing signs of diaper rash would seem to more than qualify as damaged, as it is inflamed, cracked and even sometimes visibly broken in places. It is often hard for our customers to conceive of what is exactly in their products. However, the labels speak for themselves, as does the government. In fact, the EPA and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have both said that personal care products represent a major risk to human health, and more so than even outdoor air pollution.
OTHER INGREDIENTS
-:¦:- Phthalates hormone disruptors, associated with developmental problems, particularly in genital birth defects in males & fertility problems in males. Phthalates can be found in products with "fragrance" including lotions, shampoos, baby powders, conditioners, as well as soft plastic teething and other toys, mattresses and PVC plastic bottles. In cosmetic products, Phthalates are used to stabilize synthetic fragrances. A 2008 study found elevated phthalate levels in the urine of babies who had been recently shampooed, powdered or lotioned with conventional baby products. All our products are Phthalate free!
-:¦:- Benzyl Alcohol (synthetic/chemical preservative/solvent made from petroleum or coal tar (a known human carcinogen); linked to cancer, mutations in cells & reproductive problems; studies show toxic to brain & nervous system; the CDC reports that16 babies in two different medical centers are thought to have died from saline solutions containing benzyl alcohol as a preservative; hormone disruptor; skin irritant; possible allergen.)
-:¦:- BHA (synthetic/chemical preservative; listed by Calif. EPA & others as possible carcinogen; Banned in EU; hormone disruptor; evidence of development and reproductive effects; linked to mutation in cells, birth defects & tumors; absorbed thru skin & stored in body; allergen, skin & respiratory)
-:¦:- Methy, Butyl or Propyl Parabens (synthetic/chemical preservatives; made from petroleum pulled up from oil wells for gasoline production & produced in a petrochemical refinery; found inside of breast tumors; hormone disruptors; research linked to possible lower sperm count in male babies; penetrates the skin & appear in the blood; linked to cell mutations & reproductive and developmental problems; allergens);
-:¦:- Petrolatum (synthetic/chemical; made from petroleum pulled up from oil wells during gasoline production & produced in a petrochemical refinery thru catalytic reactions that crack molecular structure; prone to contam. w/ cancer-causing impurities from manufacturing process; banned in EU as probable carcinogen; studies find petrolatum impurities in tissue of breast cancer patients; hormone disruptor);
-:¦:- Talc (linked with cancer if inhaled, ovarian cancer & Urinary Tract Infections if used in genital area; lung disease; studies found talc inside of ovarian tumors);
-:¦:- Mineral Oil (a byproduct of petroleum in the making of gasoline; may cause birth defects; possible carcinogen itself, plus prone to contamination w/other cancer-causing agents during the manufacturing process; eye/skin irritant; may hinder normal skin respiration by blocking oxygen, while trapping in toxins & wastes; may cause asthma & tumor formation);
-:¦:- Propylene Glycol (synthetic/chemical used to trap moisture; petroleum-based, like gasoline; pulled up from oil wells during gasoline production & produced in a refinery through chemical reactions using banned racing fuel; allows chemicals to absorb past skin & into blood; hormone disruptor; suspected neurotoxin & immunotoxin; linked with reproductive problems & mutations in cells; allergen);
-:¦:- Titanium Dioxide (chemically processed/synthetic; classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a possible carcinogen; may cause cell damage; evidence of reproductive toxicity; may be bound w/other chemicals such as Dimethicone);
-:¦:- PEGs (synthetic/chemical detergent; made from ethylene oxide, a known human carcinogen per the IARC; prone to contamination w/ other cancer-causing agents, such as dioxane; made from petroleum pulled up from oil wells in gasoline production and produced in a petrochemical refinery through chemical reactions; irritants.)
-:¦:- Lanolin (lubricant/emollient; oil from the glands of sheep; prone to contamination w/ cancer causing & neurotoxic pesticides such as DDT, which studies show absorb through the skin, because conventional sheep are dipped whole into pesticides; considered strong allergen to skin & lungs);
-:¦:- Dimethicone (a synthetic/chemical lubricant/emollient otherwise known as silicone; silicone is a controversial ingredient, including in breast implants; may accumulate in the body; non-biodegradable; may inhibit respiration of the skin, while trapping toxins inside);
-:¦:- Paraffins/Microcrystalline Wax/Ozekerite (synthetic/chemical wax derived from petroleum from oil wells (from gasoline production) & produced in a petrochemical refinery; irritants; studies show Paraffins may be linked to tumor formation.)
-:¦:- Fragrance (harmless-sounding term used to conceal 3000 chemicals, mostly petroleum-based, which are aromatic, but not made from flowers, and many of which are toxic, such as phthalates (EPA classifies as probable carcinogens, and considered developmental toxins)
I was shocked after reading this list! I’ve been checking out online stores for natural diaper balm free of these harmful ingredients. I have used diaper creams that have contained at least some of these things on both of my children! I wish I would have known better. I should of already been using natural balms on my younger son because he has very sensitive skin. But now I will start. I’ve come across a few that I like and will placing orders soon. I will post my finds later. Hope this info will benefit any mommies and new mommies out there.
